Character Information

Character Name: Merlin
Canon: BBC's Merlin
Canon-Point: End of season 2.
Age: 19
History: here
Personality: Upon first meeting Merlin, most get the impression that he's a relatively simple person. Not necessarily stupid but plain, average. He doesn't really stand out in a crowd except for his ability to snark with the best of them and is ordinary in appearance, if you ignore the ears and his tendency to be a little awkward. He rarely gets angry and seems to lack a spine when it comes to being bossed around or picked on because he doesn't always stand up for himself. Others think he's lazy, unmotivated and generally a terrible man servant (that last bit is pretty true, honestly). For the most part, this is how he wishes to be perceived. Nobody's going to chop off your head for not mucking out the stables on time.

That said, Merlin is not ordinary at all and he knows it. While it wasn't always so, he considers his magic a blessing now, something to be used to help people (and occasionally as entertainment or to help himself out). He's had to hide his abilities for most of his life and at a time it is implied it was something shameful for him, the reason he left his village and ventured to Camelot. It never stopped him from using his powers, just left him feeling like an outcast. When Morgana's powers become more pronounced and she gets upset, Merlin easily relates to her struggles, worries, and the secrets she has to keep from everyone she's close to. He still feels isolated from time to time because of the necessity to keep important secrets from his friends, even shows frustration that this is the way it has to be for now but it gets put on the back burner in the scale of the bigger picture. Namely, looking out for his friends, Arthur (who falls into the first category but is also tied to his destiny) and the kingdom as a whole.

As you can imagine, Merlin's got a lot on his plate. Keeping up with Arthur and his chores is a full time job, plus he often helps Gaius out with his tasks, practices his magic, and oh yeah, saves Camelot from certain doom almost every episode (sometimes he's even responsible for it!). It's tough and causes him a lot of grief and stress but he's rarely shown getting snappy. Of course, the kid is human and he has his days, just like everyone, but they're few and far between and usually the result of a lack of sleep while he's being run ragged. Thank you Arthur and your need to prove yourself. He's not exactly a pushover-if Merlin really disagrees with something, he'll make his feelings known (while omitting a few details if it involves the M word)-but he picks and chooses his battles. Plus the teasing and bossing around is apparently Arthur for endearment.

This kid also has the very strange talent of being about to make a bad situation worse. In short, Merlin is a meddler. For good reasons, though! When a magical plague is going through Camelot and Gwen's father becomes ill, Merlin is the first to think of coming up with a magical cure to save him. Gaius warns him not to interfere and that they must find the solution naturally but Merlin isn't very good at listening when he's focusing on doing The Right Thing. Of course this almost gets Gwen killed and he has to fix that but the point is, his heart's in the right place. He just doesn't worry about possible consequences in the future and reacts on impulse when the people he cares about are suffering or in danger.

Merlin is also known for being steadfastly loyal and brave. A normal person would think otherwise considering he appears to let Arthur do all the work when someone with a sword shows up, but he does help from the sidelines, using magic to aid in fights. He's also completely willing to give his life for his friends and family, doing so numerous times throughout the series. Luckily for him, most of his friends feel the same way about him and want him around.

Really, Merlin's biggest problem is that he doesn't always think. He's highly intelligent, a quick study and good at coming up with improvised ideas in stressful situations but he sometimes misses out on certain social cues, like one's coming from Gwen about her feelings for him in the first season or when Arthur expects him to do something. It's because of this tendency not to use his brain that he often puts his foot in his mouth and says the first thing that comes to mind. This can lead him to trouble, usually in the form of spending the day getting pelted by fruit in the stocks but it has had serious repercussions for him in the past. He's almost died trying to save Arthur from being poisoned because he blurted out the threat instead of taking care of it subtly. While he is adept at lying to cover his own butt, he's not quick on his feet in situations where he has to cover for other's. This isn't to say he's always a blundering fool. Merlin's life is dealing with the messes created by others and himself in the background and making sure no one catches on that he was involved. He's perfectly capable of being sneaky and delicate when he has to.

Like most people in generic fantasy land, Merlin's got his own code of honor. He's a man of his word when he makes a promise and has no qualms with killing when its necessary-numerous evil henchmen, wizards, and monsters can attest to that-but there are things even he has a hard time doing. Murdering a child despite the later threat he will pose to Arthur, for instance, and Morgana when she decides to go darkside. Initially he refuses to do either, denying the problem in the former case and hoping to sway Morgana back in the latter. However, when the chips are down Merlin will make the hard choices, as much as it pains him to do so. He takes these decisions hard and will mope and mull over the 'what ifs' for a short time, especially in Morgana's case. If he had been honest with her about his magic and given her a confident, would she have made the decision to try to kill Uther for good? In the end he comes to terms with what he has to do but it isn't ever easy.

Abilities/Powers: Magic! Merlin is pretty much a special wizard snowflake of his world, able to perform spells with no formal training ever since his birth. He's also able to pick it up incredibly fast; for most people it would take years of dedicated training and studying to get to his level, but he can usually learn a pretty difficult spell within a few days.

I'll list his magical abilities below!:
-slow down an object in motion
-move objects with a magical form of telekinesis
-animating inanimate objects
-fus ro dah without the shouting, basically he can knock down and even kill others with a telekinetic burst
-using telepathy to speak with other magically inclined people
-sensing powerful magic/magical items
-elemental magic including fire, wind and lightning
-commanding dragons and wyverns
-making a magical shield to protect himself
-transfiguring

He gains more powers as the series progresses but these are the relevant ones at his current pull point.

Items: His bag, and the magical book he keeps inside of it!

Merlin is a special snowflake in that he can communicate to other magically inclined people via telepathy. The distance on this is probably a few yards and he can't read anyone's mind. I probably won't use this often ICly but if you'd be okay with him communicating with your characters this way, please fill out the form below:

» EXSILIUM INFORMATION
Chosen WEAPON: A staff that shoots lightning.
Chosen SKILLSET: Fighter! Merlin doesn't use weapons often and when in combat, he tends to stay out of the way but he's not inactive in battle. He subtly uses his powers to aid people for fear of his magic being discovered but once he realizes that showing off isn't going to get him decapitated or burned at the stake, that won't be a problem anymore.
